The first year in practice is an exciting yet frightening time in our careers. The reality is that the four years we spend earning our doctorate degree does not prepare us for the reality of being newly minted veterinarians. The transition from clinical student to doctor has a steep learning curve. No amount of academia can prepare you for the daily challenges faced in the field- communicating with difficult clients, making crucial and sometimes life altering decisions regarding patient care, tailoring treatment plans for financially limited clients, not knowing the answer to a question (and having to reference VIN several times a day), or making a much dreaded mistake.

The South Florida Veterinary Medical Association acknowledges that the transition from student to associate is challenging. We know that the best way to learn is through mentorship. Our new mentorship program aims to match new graduates with members of our veterinary community based on professional interests.

This mentorship program was designed to help new graduates make the successful transition to clinical veterinary practice. The program offers the South Florida veterinary community a means of collaboration, camaraderie, opportunities for professional development, and networking. Actively maintaining a support system through mentorship during this crucial transition in a new graduates career can help build their confidence, share knowledge, and improve patient care.
